Marcelo:

A hang 3 can fly St. Helena if they are sponsored by a club member. That means that a club member vouches for your flying ability, your ability to safely launch and get out to the LZ. There are basically no bail-out LZs close to the mountain, and you have to be experienced enough to judge when to leave the mountain so that you don't end up piling into the trees, grapvines, brush, etc. before you can reach the LZ.

So, do you know a Sonoma Wings member who can vouch for you?

By all means, come out on Saturday. If you can't find a pilot who knows you well enough to vouch for you, at least you'll be meeting pilots who you can get to sponsor you next year, and you'll have a great BBQ!

Marcelo, If you have mountain flying experience, bring your log book. St Helena is a sensitive site. It can be sinky between the Mt and LZ and one could easily end up in vineyards. We will be scrutinized this day as Rangers and Landowners WILL be watching. If you are qualified we will let you fly. What glider are you flying? It looks like there will be openings.

Thank you for replying to my message. I currently fly a WW Sport 2 and have done some mountain flying at McClure, Dunlap and Hull. I met some Sonoma Wings pilots at Hull that will be present at St Helena, including you Ernie, also have met others at Funston. It has been a while you probably do not remember but I was the guy in a Falcon 3 at the time that topped Hull and briefly shared the top with another pilot in an Atos.

I do understand the site requirements and group's concerns, as well as the fact of the long glide to the LZ. I do not want to be a liability to my sponsor nor to the Sonoma Wings club. No worries, I will stay local and hope for good conditions at Funston.

Thank you very much for the invite for the great BBQ but it is quite a distance just for BBQ. I am sure you all will have a great time.

I have never flewn St. Helena before, can someone answer my questions:
1. Can I drive a two-wheel sedan (Honda Accord) to the LZ? Or 4W is required?
2. Can I assume to get a ride up to the launch cause I am coming up by myself.
3. Where is the Launch? Can anyone post a google map url to point to the exact launch position?
(For example, I assume this URL points to the LZ: )
4. Is LZ visible from the launch?

It will be good to see you again Joe and Lijian. Stay over and camp on saturday night - it's a beautiful place, we'll have a campfire and it's going to be a nearly full moon. Just meet in the LZ at 10 am. - we will organize the rides.

Marcelo, you should ditch Funston and come fly St H. It's a wonderful place to fly and unless you are a local it's not often you will get to fly it.

If you have a Sport 2 and can fly Hull I think you will be fine at St H.

The flying and party are a blast.

Hi, I'm an advanced H3 pilot with a sport 2. I've never flown St Helena. I flew Hull a couple of times last summer, but have had most of my mountain experience at Indian Valley, Hat Creek and Dunlap. With Log book in hand, what are my chances of getting sponsored to fly?

If possible, I'll head up with Joe Jackson and Ryan Gobel, and fly Sat only.

Ok Leo !! I will ditch Funston tomorrow and come to the fly-in. I also convinced my wife and kid to tag along and spend the day out. I will come ready to fly, but if I did not make cut (so many people responding last minute) I will be happy to spend the day at the LZ with family, new friends and good food.

Myself - fly just Saturday, food, beer, could be a driver if necessary

Here's the sign-up list.

There was a flurry of activity yesterday. We now have all 20 flying slots filled, with 3 people on the waiting list.

As in the past, if you're on the waiting list, you should still come out since we usually have a few folks not show up, opening up a slot.

NOTES:
1. I had "JTSquid" and "RG" want to fly. "RG" said one of the two is named John Taylor. JTSquid (named John) dropped out. RG didn't say he wanted to fly on Saturday so I didn't put him on the list.
2. Lijian, sorry, but we don't do "light" beer at this fly-fest. You'll have to grit your teeth and swallow that bitter Redtail, or whatever microbrew Matt gets.
3. Only three vehicles are allowed up the mountain so we'll be providing transportation for all pilots and their gliders.
4. Make sure you're at the LZ by 9AM. Pilots meeting is at 10AM with departure immediately afterwards. You'll need to have your glider loaded BEFORE the pilots meeting.
5. Lijian had more questions. The LZ is a flat field with roads next to it. Any car can get there. Yes, your map of the LZ is correct. If you look at photos from previous years, you'll get an idea of where the launch is. The LZ is clearly visible from launch.
6. Some pilots will be taking their gliders to the top this afternoon (Friday). If you want to get in on that, contact Leo Jones ASAP.

(Also special thanks to Mike for helping us itinerants get in another flight Sunday. It was slightly smoother in the air, not quite as high (5k max for me vs 5800 yesterday).
10-20 over the trees in the lz made landing interesting, shall we say. 'Nother fun day, and yes, we finished the beer....)

A great BBQ was put on by Ernie and EC and all that contributed food. And of coarse Jane for allowing this great group of people to gather and share this wonderful sport of ours. Let me know if there are descrepencies in the results. Not that it will change anything, but I strive for accuracy.
So... A good time was had by all. Thanks to the drivers, Kathy Nelson, Grace and Phil. Thanks to Phil for staying on launch until the last pilot was off. Thanks to Ernie and EC for cooking. The food was great and was done a little later so the drivers and late landers all got fed the same time as everyone else. Thanks to Matt for getting the beer and for being the primary landing official, doing all the measuring and timing and being out in the hot sun and writing and stuff.
Everyone had good launches and landings. While setting up, were treated to a fly-by from Todd in his 150 cessna. He later joined us in the LZ. The ranger assigned to the mountain and her daughter joined us for the BBQ. They played around with a paraglider with Anthony's help. The Foote family was represented by Paul and Forrest. Of course Jane and her friend Barbara were there. Barbara brought a cake with the Sonoma Wings logo on it! Way cool. Also thanks to everyone who brought side dishes. No one went hungry!
Thanks to Scot and Matt and Justin for donating prizes. We awarded prizes and allowed people the option to steal an already awarded prize or take one from the stash. That was fun.
Also thanks to the club pilots who gave up their flying slots so that non-club pilots could fly. It was so much fun we should do it again next year.
Flying conditions were very good. Many pilots got over 6000'. Everyone stayed up as long as they wanted. We had gliders in the air for over 4.5 hours, until after 6:00. The declared duration was a fun task. Scot nailed it. I would have but couldn't fight my way down through lift in the end. More pilots came up short than went over their declared times.
Some pilots still need to pay their entry fees but we know they will.
