If the weather reports hold true through the weekend, it looks like a 200 mile flight from Elk is possible. Lift to 13,000 at hull and 16,000' at Alturas.

I should note that last time we had a forecast like this it over developed and lightning started all the fires. Vince

How are the sites looking. I should be able to get out for a day, maybe overnight.
Hull sounds like a good plan! I'll keep my eye on the board and appear somewhere. -Brian |

Does anyone know the most efficient route from the Upper Lake area to Hull / Lake Pilsbury?
Google maps wants to send me over Elk Mountain (Route M1) and I'm pretty sure there are faster ways to go, but it's been a while since I have driven that direction. Thanks! -Brian |

Routes to Pillsbury | ||
|
(05/29/09 13:35:00) |
Brian,
There are 2 roads into Pillsbury. The one through Upper Lake is the obvious, main road that goes right up Elk, then turns into dirt a mile or two beyond the Elk launch turn off. From there is a long dirt road until you get within 3 miles of the Eel River. The other route, you take 20 W and after Blue Lakes go right though Potter valley, turning right at Hoppers Corner Bar. When you cross a bridge over the Eel river, go right, where upon it turns into dirt road. That 17 mi of dirt road is shorter than the Elk route, but usually much more crowded and can be very bumpy. Its easier to get stuck behind slow traffic (boat trailers) and eat lots of dust. The road on the East side of the Eel river has been washed out for several years, but used to be the best route in when it was open. If your starting point is Upper Lake, I would take the route up Elk as you described, and if your starting point is 101/Ukiah, I would go thorugh Potter Valley. I have been travelling very regularly to Pillsbury since 1961. From Vince's post it sounds as if Sat may be the better weather. If you are new at Hull, study the site guide on this website very carefully. The LZ is by the lake edge, about 1/2 mi past the airport. Plan on getting there before 1130 to join up with other pilots. See you there! Mike K |

Elk Or Hull...? | ||
|
(05/29/09 14:20:10) |
I'll check the board tonight and tomorrow AM and show up somewhere. I do need to take a look at the Elk LZ as it sounds like things have changed. How
close can we safely land near CC camp parking area so we don't have to hike a mile to get the vehicles?
In either case my starting point is Pope Valley, a bit south of Middletown. The maps run me through Kelseyville, Lake Port, Upper Lake, then over Elk. Either route will work, I just prefer to get there on the quickest route. I have been through Potter Valley, so I know that way. I have flown Hull several times and am familiar with the guidelines. I use to land at the airport as an alternative. Has something changed in the last couple of years? I'm sure the lake is cooler as long as it has a dry area to land which appears to be the case. Thanks, -Brian |

Hull on Sat. May 30 | ||
|

Todd, Ryan and I were joined by 2 carloads of Berkeley club pilots, one of the pilots being new to Hull. Thanks to Kate for driving. Two other south bay pilots
showed up later, but chose not fly as they were having car problems. Todd had a minor mishap when his harness limiter line broke during set up, making his air
time less comfortable as he had to struggle to lay down. After the first 2 pilots went down, Todd and I lingered until 2 pm to launch from Timberline. I got up
on lower launch right away, but it was a bit more work to get high. Eventually I was joined by several other pilots. I topped out at 9800 and went down windy
ridge numerous times looking for more, but could only find lift to 8000 about halfway out windy ridge. The clouds had a base of about 10k but were nowhere near
Hull and the cummies over San Hedron dissipated as well. Some of the pilots landed next to the airstrip and others with more confidence landed at the regular
LZ. Everyone had fun flights, fine landings and no one even got close to getting wet. The water has gone down some since last weekend, so from next week on the
regular LZ should be plenty big enough if there is normal wind. I have put a pipe out beyond the spot to hold a windsock or flag.
I will be out of town next weekend. Mike K |
