The annual Sonoma Wings St. John / Potato Hill fly-in this year will be Saturday and Sunday, August 8th & 9th. Make your plans now. Everyone's welcome. Bring your family. As usual paragliders will fly from Potato Hill and hang gliders will fly from Mt. St. John. The cost is $30 per pilot which includes a custom t-shirt, prizes at the Sunday awards presentation, and the legendary all-you-can-eat Camacho tri-tip and chicken barbecue feast with plenty of side dishes and soft drinks. We'll have lots of prizes to give out. As usual the barbecue will be at Mary's ranch in Stonyford. Bring your swim suit to cool off with the kids under the tree in the canal. Extra meals are $10. Kids under 10 years old eat for free. Extra t-shirts are $15. If you would like long sleeve shirts, small or kid size shirts, you can call me in advance to special order them: Greg at 707-747-6150
The hang glider format will include pilot's choice of open distance or out and return XC on Saturday, followed by a shorter romp on Sunday, which will be announced later, to get everyone back to the landing field in time for the barbecue and awards. The paraglider tasks will be announced later.
The various camping options include East Park Reservoir, Mary's ranch, Letts Lake campground, Dixie Glade campground, and the top of St. John. Letts Lake campground requires a modest user fee.
Any updates will be posted here.
Update Tuesday,
8/4/09: There will be a hang glider pilots' meeting on both Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at
launch on St. John. Get there early to sign up, pay your fee, and get your t-shirt before the meeting.
Update Tuesday, 8/4/09: As of today,
Tuesday, August 4th, only one Sonoma Wings paraglider pilot has expressed interest in our fly-in this weekend. Unfortunately, there is another paragliding
event at Dunlap that conflicts with our fly-in. It is unclear whether Sonoma Wings will have a qualified representative to head up the paragliding portion of
the fly-in at Potato Hill, attend to pilot safety, call tasks for both days, and answer questions. Unless a qualified person steps up, the paraglider portion
of the fly-in will be officially cancelled. Paraglider pilots may still fly at Potato Hill on their own and at their own risk, get a t-shirt, and enjoy the
barbecue, but there will be no competition for them. So, if you paraglider pilots are planning to come, post a reply now to this topic.
Sunday's task will be decided Sunday morning. It will be designed to get pilots back to the barbecue early.
To help us plan for everything, please post a reply to this topic to let us know you'll be coming. State how many pilots, shirt sizes, extra shirts, extra meals, and kids. We always need volunteers to drive retrieval vehicles.
