leo called the meeting to order. A letter was read aloud that announced the death of a Sonoma Wings Member who died as a result of an flying accident while approaching the LZ at Elk mountain. The loss of fellow Pilot, Bill Vogel, was profoundly felt and the following dialoque topics ensued: What can we learn from this?? Power lines at the LZ? Heart attack? Results of autopsy? Encouraged all members to be current with their CPR and first aid. Club donations to honor bills life. The following Sat . there will be a celebration of Bills life in Ukiah. A possible marker at the Elk Mtn. launch? A club trophy in Bills name? Help for Cathy at her home if she needs any assistance? Fly for Bill: go out and fly possibley the following weekend at Hull? Name the Hull fly in, the Bill Vogel Memorial Fly In with the appropriate music (abba) and beverage? Name the most Improved Pilot trophy after him? Ending this topic stream with a reminder that we can't be complacent.
The Hull Fly In was discussed and critiqued: A big THANK YOU To Charlie W. for organizing and planning the fly in was extendced to him. 26 pilots took part in the Sat.competition. Launch and Landing judging, streamer drop, Duration and spot landings where the five fields of accumulated scoring competition. Issues about judging multiple landings close to the same time was discussed, along with the criteria for all of the factors that where used to determine what is a good launch was talked about. Having a Pilots meeting prior to the start of the competition was brought up. We talked about the possibility of digitaly recording launches and landings for next year. The results of the competition are posted on the SW Bulletin Board.
Jeff A. has reformatted the letter to address the deteriating road conditons at Mt. St John and Hull Mountains and it will be sent tomorrow. Copies of the letter will be sent to other clubs with the request to have them send similar letters. Hopefully this effort will result in having the roads made possible for all users to navigate safely.
A Sierra flight report was given about flights from Walts and Tinimaha (sp).
A request for new testimonials about Pilots who have flown or leaned how to fly at Dillon beach was extended. John D. reported that there is no chance to modify the existing use permit to include powerless flight at Dillon Beach. He is working hard on getting the inclusion of the sport of Hang gliding into the final draft of the Coastal Commissions County (Sonoma and Marin) use permit. This would include Para Gliding and "Soaring" language.
New members were welcomed: Eric G.a PG Pilot of 5 years who has flown Elk, Potatoe Hill and Santa Barbara sites. Katie C. (not present) was announced as a new HG local Pilot member.
Christmas Party: The location of the party needs to be determined, John D. and Larry R. have mentioned the use of their homes as possible sites. The theme of this years Party will be posted on the SW Bulletin Board and will be determined by your input there.
The next meeting will feature taking nominations for the coming years Executive Board. The election will be at the November Meeting.
Andy L. talked about the transitioning process from flying a flex wing glider to a ridgid wing glider. He talked about starting a web site that will address this topic along with a flight critique page, landing techniques and an over all emphasis on safety.
